On November 24, Nanjing Maritime Cour(“NMC”) held the  inaugurating meeting of “Youth Translation Team” and the seminar of foreign maritime law, for the purpose of building a better mechanism in serving foreign-related trials, cultivating excellent judges, and shaping  positive court culture. Li Wei, Secretary of the Commission of Provincial Organs, Dong Xiaobo, Professor of Nanjing Normal University, Lu Lu, Associate Professor of Southeast University, Yu Wenjie, Associate Professor of Southeast University, Min Xing, member of the Party Committee and Director of Political Department of NMC attended the meeting. The meeting was hosted by Zhao Peiyuan, Director of the Martime Tribunal of NMC.

Li Wei said that the establishment of youth learning group is an important measure to strengthen the theoretical knowledge of young judicial officers. Li Wei stressed that youths should improve professional skills,  innovate working methods and activate  working enthusiasm. The establishment of youth learning group is a long-term task and should be well-organized, coordinatedly-deployed, strictly-supervised and  well-supported.

Min Xing emphasized that “youth translation team” should be aware of its duties and objectives, update the English official website continuously, develop "The Voice of Judge" program.. For the better work of “youth translation team” , three expectations were put forward: improve our foreign language skills, open up the international vision of trial and cultivate outstanding young judges. Efforts should be made to build the youth translation team into a platform for training outstanding young judges, to reserve talents for building a national first-rate and even influential maritime court internationally.

For professionalism and accuracy of legal translation,  professionals, including Peng Yue, Professor of Law school of Nanjing University, Song Xiao,  Professor of Law school of Nanjing University, Dong Xiaobo, Professor of the School of Foreign Languages of Nanjing Normal University, Lu Lu, Associate Professor of Law School of Southeast University, Yu Wenjie, Associate Professor of Law School of Southeast University, and Zheng Rui, Associate Professor of Law School of Shanghai Maritime University,are invited to be the tutors of “youth translation team”.

Afterwards, Dong Xiaobo and Lu Lu separately gave a speech on the topics of methods of legal English translation and  legal research on foreign law. Yu Wenjie put forward useful suggestions about development of youth translation team and encouraged young judicial officers to take an active part in international academic conferences ,which will be useful to broaden young judges’ international horizons.
